Present Indefinite Tense: Historical Present

While talking about a person or an event which has taken a significant place in history we have to write or speak using Present Indefinite Tense.

Shakespeare is one of the greatest writers.

Here, we are talking about Shakespeare who has taken a significant place in history. So Present Indefinite Tense is to be employed instead of Past Tense.

Incorrect: Abraham Lincoln was one of the greatest persons in the world.

Correct: Abraham Lincoln is one of the greatest persons in the world.

Incorrect: Akbar ascended the throne in 1556.

Correct: Akbar ascends the throne in 1556.

Incorrect: Liberation War was the great time in our history.

Correct: Liberation War is the great time in our history.

Incorrect: Albert Einstein was the greatest scientist in the world.

Correct: Albert Einstein is the greatest scientist in the world.
